March 21, 2008, Newsletter Issue #111: Is Oil Painting Dangerous to Your Health?

Tip of the Week

Oil painting has its drawbacks and one major one is that it can be potentially dangerous to your health, but only if you mishandle the paints during use. Oil paints can be accidentally ingested or inhaled during use. It makes sense to not eat, drink or apply makeup while painting with oils. If you must mix your own oil paint powder, which isn’t highly recommended, please do while wearing a facemask to block out any powder that may waft into the air. Turpentine and other solvents are commonly used to mix with oil paints as a way to change the paint. You should never mix these solvents or use them unless you are in a well-ventilated area with a mask while doing so.
