March 14, 2008, Newsletter Issue #110: How To Put Varnish on Your Oil Painting

Tip of the Week

To apply varnish on your oil painting you first must lay your painting flat and use a flat bristle brush to apply the varnish directly on your painting. With the flat brush apply the varnish working from the top of the painting to the bottom of the painting using parallel strokes from one edge to the other. Let this first coat of varnish dry and then you can put another coat of varnish over your dried coat. Apply this second coat of varnish at right angles over the other coat of dried varnish. Let your painting lie flat for several minutes and then lean it against a sturdy wall or chair to continue drying.
