Oil paints have been around since ancient Greece where painting with oils was popular. However, the more modern form of oil painting, relative to the oil paints used today, came to be thanks to a man named James van Eyck. Obviously, he wasn’t the first person to use oil paints but he was the first man who used an oil mixture that could be used to bind mineral pigments to it. Van Eyck mixed glass that was piled, bones and mineral pigments and boiled them in a linseed oil until the reached a consistency that was paint-like.
