June 2, 2006, Newsletter Issue #21: Childrensī Art Therapy

Tip of the Week

Scholastic programs such as "Music First" and other art programs exist because educators and parents have realized the importance of self-expression in a childīs development. It is never to early to grab a brush and take to the child easel. Self-confidence and intellectual growth are just two of the more obvious benefits that art supplies.

Painting is also often used as a form of therapy for children. It is often difficult for young people to express complicated emotions during sad or stressful times. Yet we find that these emotions can be let out on paper, in vibrant, and sometimes disturbing, colors and shapes. It might seem strange at first to think that a child who canīt say the words to express sorrow or fear could manifest them so vividly in a painting on a child easel. But when you consider that the need to express has been deeply ingrained in the most primal parts of our brain, it begins to make sense.

In reality, the child is simply doing what our species has tried to do for perhaps the longest time, and that is try to be understood.
